About the University of Trieste
The University of Trieste (UNITS) includes 12 faculties, 23 Departments and more than 750 tenure-position research and teaching staff, with a total budget of 200 M€ in 2010. The University of Trieste features a strong research and education & training of excellence in Life Sciences. It is a nucleus within the “Trieste System” which includes national and international institutions and high-tech companies as the International Center for Theoretical Physics – ICTP, the International School for Advanced Studies – ISAS, the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology – ICGEB, the International Center for Science and High Technology – ICS, the Elettra Synchrotron, and many other institutions and hi-tech working in the fields of biotechnology, bioengineering, neuroscience.
Contributions to the AnastomoSEAL Project
As Coordinator of the AnastomoSEAL project, UNITS will be responsible of the management of the project. The RTD activities will involve two Departments of the University, with distinct roles within the proposal:
Department of Life Sciences
Study and development of biopolymer components and manufacturing of the patches. Chemical, physical and biological (in vitro) characterization of the materials. This department has access to instrumentation facilities of all Departments of the University of Trieste, in particular including those of Chemistry, Environment and Raw Materials Engineering, the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Clinic, the Radiology Unit. Special access agreement with the Elettra Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Trieste is established.

Clinical Department of Medical, Surgical and Health Sciences
Clinical guidance towards product development and regulatory issues and animal testing in collaboration with UNIMA Partner. Training and Dissemination activities in the academic and clinical environment.
Relevant experience in relation with the project
The University of Trieste is at “Top 20” for EU fundings in Italy in 2010. UNITS was Partner of 39 FP6 projects and 17 FP7 projects, with the role of Coordinator Partner in 2 FP6 and 3 FP7 projects, respectively. The technical and administration activities related to AnastomoSEAL project management will involve at least two personnel units from the administrative staff with expertise in EU project management.
The Department of Life Sciences of the University of Trieste, in addition to its role as an important centre of learning and education, is also a dynamic centre at the forefront of scientific and technological research. The Researchers in the Department collaborate with over fifty foreign institutions, both academic and industrial. The Departments employs over 200 researchers, 83 of whom are professors and researchers with a permanent position, and has an outstanding record of publications in prestigious international journals. The research group headed by Prof. Sergio Paoletti has been active in the field of biopolymers and industrial polymers from renewable resources for more than 35 years, with main interests toward medical applications. S. Paoletti has authored more than 190 papers and conference proceedings contributions in the field of biopolymers, biomedicine and glycobiology. S. Paoletti has been leader of both Italian National Projects (notably in “Biotechnology” and in “Biomaterials”) and EU and INTAS projects. The group of prof. Sergio Paoletti has participated in two projects under FP6, namely NAPOLY (SSA 505719-1 NAPOLY) and NEWBONE (IP, Large, Contract number 026279-2)
The Clinical Department of Medical, Surgical and Health Sciences of the University of Trieste is located at the University of Trieste Hospital. The University of Trieste Hospital is a “Hospital of national relevance” and it has got since 2008 the Accreditation and Certification by the Joint Commission International (JCI). The unit of General Surgery of the hospital is specialized in laparoscopic surgery and offers dedicated teams focusing on colorectal, bariatric and abdominal wall hernias surgery. Thyroid and breast cancer units are also present. From 2004 to 2010, a total of 598 colorectal resections were performed: 386 colon and 212 rectal cancer patients were operated
